The tail of the aircraft comes off simply by pinching two clips and pulling it straight back. Unlike the 3D Robotics Solo, which also uses a GoPro, the Hexo+ can't start or stop video recording-you'll have to use the GoPro's physical controls to do so-nor does its gimbal provide power to the GoPro, so you do run the risk of the camera battery expiring while in flight. I was also concerned when setting up the Hexo+, but found that the Velcro did a fine job keeping the camera in place.

If you're a bit wary about a strip of Velcro being the only thing keeping your $500 GoPro falling from the gimbal and meeting the ground at significant velocity, you're not alone. Instead, it rests in the gimbal's cradle and is secured using a clamp that surrounds its lens, held in place with a Velcro strap. The GoPro itself doesn't need to be secured using tools. It's a little larger than DJI Phantom quadcopters, including the Phantom 3 Professional (8.0 by 13.8 by 13.8 inches, 2.8 pounds), but it's not a drastic difference in size. It measures 9.6 by 17.1 by 16.1 inches (HWD), with small propeller blades that don't extend too far away from the body.

Given that it's powered by six rotors, the Hexo+ is surprisingly compact. One of those is our Editors' Choice, the DJI Phantom 4, which is priced in line with the Hexo+ when you take the cost of a 4K GoPro Hero4 Black camera into account.

That's a big limitation, especially given its $999 price (without a camera), and makes it a tough sell when compared with more versatile drones that include both automated flight options and manual control. It offers a number of automated camera moves, but there's no way to fly it manually. Instead, think of it as your virtual documentarian, following you around and filming your exploits from the air. The Hexo+ isn't the type of drone you get to fly yourself.

Controlled by an iOS or Android powered smartphone, its user can set specific perimeters for the camera to follow, including its distance from the subject and its position in the sky relative said subject. This intelligent drone however is capable of flying, filming and following its subject all by itself. Before, if you wanted to record your solo adventure you would have typically adorned a wearable camera such as a GoPro, yet that limited your footage to a first person POV. In need of a solution that would make aerial filming possible in the most remote places without the hassle of syncing a drone pilot, cameraman and rider together, Squadrone System developed the fully autonomous HEXO+ camera drone.
